The Whaler Santa Monica

Our experience at The Whaler was absolutely fantastic from beginning to end. The moment you walk in, the place has an energetic yet relaxed coastal vibe that perfectly matches the Santa Monica atmosphere. The ambiance is beautifully done- stylish interiors, great music, and an overall warm and lively setting that makes you instantly feel like you’re on a proper California beachside getaway. We ordered the BBQ Chicken Pizza, Kale Salad, and the Spicy Tuna on Crispy Rice, and every single dish exceeded expectations. The BBQ Chicken Pizza was incredibly flavorful with the perfect balance of smoky barbecue sauce, juicy chicken, melted cheese, and a crisp, freshly baked crust. It had that perfect combination of comfort food and elevated restaurant quality. The Kale Salad was fresh, vibrant, and surprisingly memorable. Often salads feel like an afterthought, but this one was thoughtfully prepared with excellent texture, freshness, and a light dressing that tied everything together beautifully. It complemented the richer dishes perfectly and added a refreshing balance to the meal. The real standout, however, was the Spicy Tuna on Crispy Rice. Easily one of the best appetizers we’ve had in a long time. The crispy rice had the perfect crunch, while the spicy tuna was incredibly fresh, flavorful, and well-seasoned. Every bite had a great balance of texture, spice, and richness. You can tell real attention is paid to both presentation and flavor here. Beyond the food, the service and overall experience made the visit even more enjoyable. The staff was welcoming, attentive, and created a very comfortable dining experience without ever feeling intrusive. The entire place carries a vibrant social energy while still allowing you to relax and enjoy the meal at your own pace. Whether you’re visiting Santa Monica for the views, the beach, or simply looking for a great restaurant with amazing food and atmosphere, The Whaler is absolutely worth visiting. It’s the kind of place that gives you the complete experience- delicious food, beautiful ambiance, and that unforgettable California coastal charm. We’ll definitely be coming back again.

The Whaler isn’t necessarily the best place in the area, but it’s a fun spot to end the night after going somewhere fancier. It has a casual, lively vibe that works especially well if you’re bar hopping in Santa Monica with friends. The blue lighting, beachy decor, big bar, and slightly quirky atmosphere give it a fun late-night feel. Not a must-go destination on its own, but a solid place to finish the night with a group.

We had a disappointing experience at The Whaler and, unfortunately, it confirmed what many other reviewers have said about the 3% fee they add to the bill. The experience got off to a bad start when we asked if we could sit outside because it was uncomfortably loud inside. Instead of accommodating the request professionally, the hostess told us the restaurant “wasn’t our vibe,” which came across as rude and unnecessary. The fish tacos were the one bright spot—they were actually very good. Unfortunately, everything else fell short. The lobster mac and cheese lacked flavor and simply wasn’t tasty. The coleslaw was incredibly bland. The fish and chips arrived undercooked, with the fish still cold in the center, making it inedible. The clam chowder appeared to be leftover from the day before and was served separated, with the butter floating on top instead of being properly incorporated. To top it off, we specifically asked for tap water, but our server initially tried to bring us bottled still water instead. I would avoid this place.

Great location right on the beach with an unbeatable Santa Monica vibe. The atmosphere and ocean views were definitely the highlight, especially around sunset. Drinks felt more like a casual dive bar style, and the nachos were just okay, but overall it’s still a fun spot to hang out with friends and enjoy the beach scene.

Me and my friend recently went here and ordered the triple dip, and IPA battered fish. The queso dip wasn’t heated all the way through, and had a hard and chewy top. The guacamole and salsa were pretty good though. The battered fish was really good me and my friend both agree. The atmosphere was great and amazing to watch the FIFA World Cup. Though our server wasn’t really visiting our table. Every table around us got service and at one point after I paid in cash I was waiting for my change and planned to tip via card since all I had were big bills left. She gave me an odd stare, looked at me up and down and as I put up my hand to ask for my change she walked right past us! Took two tables orders, looked at me another time and walked to the back. I didn’t see her again for almost ten minutes to which I said I couldn’t wait anymore because my ride was almost here. We had spent more time waiting with her making eye contact with us as she walked by than we spent enjoying the food and such. I understand completely that they are busy but to make direct eye contact with me multiple times and walk to take others orders, then leave over and over again. I’m not sure what her name was, just that she was petite and had really nice curly hair in a bun. I was really frustrated and I couldn’t tell what was going on for her to treat us like that. But overall the food was good, just mediocre service.
